    Thanks for the reply Frugal

I've looked at last years bill for the period November 09-May 10 to see how many units we used, and divided that by 26 to get an average weekly use, so that I have a rough idea of how much we shouldn't be using more than IYSWIM

Then I've taken a reading tonight, and will take another next Sunday, and every Sunday thereafter to see if we're keeping on track.

I'm going to try having the thermostat at around 15-17º, and have it on all the time, so that the house doesn't get completely cold several times a day and overnight like it is at the moment (it was 13º in my lounge yesterday morning when I got up) Although I will only have it at around 10-15º during the night.

That still wont keep the house warm enough for my liking, but we can't always have what we want :) and at least it we wont have to endure periods of the day when the house has a temperature that leaves us totally frozen regardless of how many layers we have on.

I have GCH - vailliant combi fitted 2005. I had it to come on at 4pm until 7.30pm @ 14 degrees.
I found that with the cold the house got down to 8 degrees  when I came home early 1 day before 4pm. So I put it on 24 hrs @ 10 degrees when I went to work at 8am last wednesday 24th Nov. I would then put it up to 14 when I came home at 5.30 ish. Have left it on 24 hr setting at 10 degrees when I'm out and overnight.

I have only turned the thermostat up to 12 - 13 this weekend while I've been home and the house is not as cold as normal when I'd put it on 14.

    That's interesting - thank you :)

Have you considered taking readings to see if by doing that, you are using more units of gas at all?

I have taken some but not specifically since I've done the 24/7 thing. I am however going to start taking a daily reading.
Just to give you an idea - read last thing at night and includes use for shower + gas hob (Did the 24/7 thing at 9pm on 24.11)

    20.11. 9854
    25.11. 9862
    27.11. 9867
    reading now 9868

(My meter measures hcf so needs to be multiplied etc to get the kwh units)

    I've been Money Tipped!
Well temperature dropped in the house today. We had people coming this evening and turne the heating on early in the day to warm the house up and just couldn't get it warm outside the kitchen. I have people coming tomorrow so I think I'll leave the heat on low overnight and up in the morning. :( I feel wasteful.

I really noticed the difference not wearing thermals, in and out of the house today and I'm on antibiotics as of yesterday which might make me feel rough and if they do then I think I'll keep heating on then to...no point making a sick body work harder on keeping warm than fighting infection. That is if the house ever gets warm!

Have put dog beds in the warm kitchen for the dogs and the greyhound is relishing not having her coat on this evening:)

Finally put up curtain across front door and sorted wonky curtain rail in lounge so can pull thick curtains and really feeling the difference..thermostat still at 16 but feel toasty with no wood fire lit this eve. Dining room is without a radiator til thurs so we eat our meals quick sharp and dash back to the warmth..cannot imagine whole house feeling like that!

Heating currently off - it's snowing outside, 0.6 degrees, and 9 degrees in the kitchen
It's only off because Sat night the boiler failed and there's an engineer repairing right at this moment.

I agree at this moment in time I have the halogen and oil heaters (no central heating) on full sod the price i'll deal with it later (I need to feel beter). Went to work last night (they seem to have put heating up from the night before as not so cold:D).
By 9 pm was feeling short of breath using my salbutamol thought ok i'm usually fine some salbutamol it will go away but by midnight could not talk in sentences soo SOB really did not feel well:((I have reallly well controled asthma) not sure if this came from cold, slightly damp flat I slept in during the day after my night before.
Some high dose salbutamol and oral steroid later by 2 am felling better (the plus point of working in hospital no four hour wait in A&E well it has to have some plus points)
I'm feeling ok now barr not being able to lie flat as it makes it hard to breath and dealing with side effects of salbutamol+++, jittery shaking and no way I'm getting to sleep for now as salbutamol make me hiper.:o
I'm cuddled on the sofa with my heating blanket, a bead bag behind me so I can sit up, inhaler in my pocket (its funny I use it has a comforter when I don't feel well I'm happer if I know its really close and tend to fall asleep with it in my hand:p) going to play and surf till I feel tired enought to sleep.
