Warning & Praise Tesco Clubcard Credit Card

Hi all

I have had a Tesco Clubcard credit card for quite some time and had always paid it by posting a cheque.

I recently decided to bring this in line with my other cards and set up on-line servicing for the card.

I had to wait for them to send me a code in the post to register on-line and to advise that I would no longer receive paper statements (no problem as most of my cards are set up this way).

I duly registered and had an email to confirm this.

The problem occurred when I checked my account a few days ago to find that I had received a £12 late fee payment.

I had not received any email notification that this was due so it was paid a couple of days late.

On checking the Tesco site it appears that you have to request alerts by email or text (which I have now done).

I had paid the bill as soon as I saw it and wasn't going to bother about the charge but today received a letter to confirm my dfault sum of £12 for late payment.

So I phoned customer services and, to their credit, they have agreed to refund the £12 charge as the account was previously always paid on time and the late payment only happened when switching to on-line payments.

So whilst I am happy that they refunded the charge, I would warn you to check that your alerts are set up with Tesco if you have just recently set up online servicing for your card as it is not mentioned in the email they send you and I didn't notice it when setting up the account (might have been there but not obvious to me).

The fact that they agreed the refund so easily suggests that this issue may have occurred before.

Hopefully this will help anyone in similar circumstances.

  • hi I set up my Tesco online last month ( trying to cut down on phone calls ) I had my text, so paid the amount showing. About 4 days later I had an email which then showed me i had more to pay. Surely the text should come when your statement is ready? Im waiting to see what happens this month.

I had the same problem, I always paid my bill via money transfer every month about 3 days before the due date. One month my payment did not get to them intime so they hit me with the £12 fee - even though I had sent it early. So i switched it over to automatic direct debit of the full amount. The month I did that I also got a £12 fee.
Just one of those things you have to watch out for, which seems to catch everyone out :)

I have email alerts set up and they always send me an email when the statement is ready and another one ten days before the bill is due.
  • I can't set this up. I did have online servicing, but every time I went to log in the "attempts" at login had been exceeded! It would appear someone had stumbled on my user name and tried to find the password. Fortunately they never did but it has meant that I have given up trying to log in after several resets. However, I can see all the information from my savings account anyway, I log in to that and then look at my cc details but I still get paper statements and cannot service my cc from the website! All credit to them though, whoever it was never got anywhere near my details!

Have you tried phoning your CC company up and ask them to change your user-name?

I just gave up I have to admit! It would be different if I could not see my account, not too worried about online servicing as I pay through my bank anyway, and I set up my own reminders. Something to consider if I close the savings account though.
