Getting reg plate info...

My work collegue has just bought a new car and after a week of driving it, somebody has bumped into his passenger side!

He was driving towards traffic lights and a car pulled out of a side street without looking and went into him.

He pulled over to speak to the guy in the other car, but the car was already speeding off up the street! He managed to get the first half of the reg plate but couldn't see the second half before he zoomed off.

He went to the police and they said there is nothing they can do without a full registration plate number...

The road that the car came out of was a cul-de-sac kind of street so we assume that this car either belonged to somebody on the street or he was visiting, as it's not a road you would just turn down due to it being a dead end.

Is there anyway of finding out who owns the car or what the whole reg might be from DVLA if he gives the information he knows ie: MK03, the make and model of the car and the street it came from, or is it a lost cause?

Thanks in advance:)

  • Is there anything stopping you walking down the road and seeing if you can spot the car?

You only need the numberplate and car description to be passed onto the insurers - you do not need to approach the owner/driver at all - the insurers will do the rest.

^^ Just go down the street every now and then, eventually id bet you spot the car... The report the full number to the Police.

  • The DVLA will !!!!! anybody's personal details around for the princly sum of £2.50 to, more or less, anybody who wants it. You'd need the full reg plate as a minimum though.

He's been driving past the street every now and then and not seen it, we suspect it may be in for repair as it's unlikely this guys car came out unmarked due to the state of the doors on my mates.

He doesn't want to speak to the guy, he just wants to know if he can get the number plate so he can go through his insurers. But I think it's just a waiting game to see if this guy turns up again...

"Every now and then"? Does he want to find the car or not?

He may have to actually get out of his car and walk up and down the street several days. Look up driveways, down the side of houses.

Surprising how much more you can see when walking.

Google streetview, Is it on that?

Checkout the HPI check sites, you can pop the reg number in and it tells you the make
and model, Before offering a full check for a fee.

Or the DVLA website, put the reg & model in & see how many matches you get.

AAA - ZZZ may take you a while though.

The police can do this with ease. You just need to find someone who can be bothered.

He's been to the police twice stating he knows the beginning of the reg, what street it was, what make and model it was, but they say they don't have the facility to find out the full reg and/or who it belongs to...

    I will try streetview!:j
  • But still, its a hit and run and is a criminal offence. Ask police to toe this

Then that person is lying or is dim!

That sort of search would take seconds, if the car was from the street or local, if it was visiting from 100s of miles away, it would probably be TFD.

Go back to the police and speak to someone more senior.
