I don't doubt the admin or fraud costs.

All these new OAP benefits, should rise from age 60 to 70/75.

Fraud costs a under a billion according to http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/BenefitsTaxCreditsAndOtherSupport/BenefitFraud/DG_10014876

That leaves £8bn for admin. That would imply 160,000 jobs costing £50k a year could be cut.

Oh good thinking pet - 70 yrs olds climbing scaffolding with a load of bricks cos they cant afford to stop work? Wow. And 70 yr old doddery teachers in charge of your kids, half blind and half deaf...Thank god you're not in politics:rotfl:
I have asked twice on this thread, politely, for clarification of this Times report. None of you have answered or acknowledged me and yet you are all discussing it - so have obviously seen it.
    Lovely people in here.

I agree that there seems to be an unwillingness to hire older people and wonder if 70 to 80 year olds will really make a large contribution to the labour force.

My aunt taught in a school until she was 70 and was made to retire from the school because of their insurance. Now age 79, she still teaches in evening school twice a week. Having seen her run for the last train home, she certainly isn't "doddery" either.

If you want to retire at 60 (or don't work, but want all the extra benefits at 60) then you should provide for yourself.

What usually happens is that the workers of our society want to keep on working past 60, while the others want to be kept. All these extra benefits at 60 should be raised to age 70 and I say that as someone who will qualify for a bus pass in 3 1/2 years time.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

I think people can teach until they are older, but what about hod carriers, hairdressers, supermodels, premier league footballers, etc.

Even party political leaders are in their 40s these days with their being a lot of emphasis on youth.

So the entire population has to do what one person's aunt did ? - and who is going to employ a 70yr old to do anything strenuous when the dole queues are winding round the block already? What percentage of 70 years olds are perfectly fit and able? Some people have no commonsense at all. Ideas like this were condemned as inhumane 100 years ago. Next it will be "Bring Back the Workhouse "!
Tell you what - why don't you work until you are 75 and refuse all benefits (if there are any left). Then we will all be happy!

Would any of the nice people who pay for access to the Times please tell me if there's anything in that report about Pension Credit, or over 60s ? Thanks ! :)
    From the article:

"The new system will not include pensions, only benefits for those of working age. "

do you own in Bangkok Sibley? Genuine question. If so, where?

For the sake of disclosure, I do own over there.

Let me guess. A pied-à-terre in Boyztown Pattaya? ;)

I might be incorrect but is this not what working tax credit was set up to achieve?

The new system will carry a guarantee that anyone in work will be better off than someone on the dole. Claimants will be allowed to keep more of their benefits when they take a job or increase their hours.
