DVD playing software

I have just fitted a DVDwriter to my pc but I need some software to play dvd's on it, can anyone suggest some simple free software I can use and where to get it.

Apologies, I am wrong, XP only has CD burning in it, not DVD by the look of it. Having previously installed an Ashampoo product from a computer magazine cover disc, I receive the occasional marketing/spam from them.
Recently they sent me a key for the full version of their Burning Studio v5 (I noticed that this was also on the cover of one of the computer mags this month).
I have installed it (but not used it) and noticed that one of the options was to register for a full key (in the process probably agreeing to them sending their emails).
It claims to burn CD/SVCD/DVD and Blu-ray. Might be worth a look:

Try VLC

vlc will allow you to play a DVD.
