Amex Platinum 3rd time around?? still a New customer??

Hi,

I got the Amex Platinum for the 5% in the first 3 months, and got the cashback after the year and then cancelled the card.

2 months later i applied and got one again, used it for the 5% for the first 3 months then made a minimal spend each month so it wouldn't go dormant and i've just received the cashback now the year is up.

During this 2nd year I also got an Amex rewards card (for the bonus points in the first 3 months) and then continued to use the reward card as my main card while just using the platinum for one small spend each month to prevent dormancy.

I'd like to cancel the pLatinum card now i've got my cashback for the 2nd time around, but would then like to apply again for another in a few months time. I'll be moving house so should be able to easily get the max cashback in the first 3 months.
However i'm not sure i'll qualify for the 5% cashback rate as i won't be a NEW customer as I've still got the rewards card.

Will i have to cancel the rewards card too?

Well the best people to ask would be AMEX but I would have thought that the answer is that whilst you hold one of their cards then you're still a customer.

I got the platinum charge card as an upgrade from the Green and still counted as a new customer for one of the deals - maybe you'll get lucky!

    Well there you go.
The definitive answer is that AMEX can make the rules up as they go along :j

I have an existinging Amex Blue cash back card for many years and just got a Platinium cashback with the 5% offer. So 'New Customer' means new customers of the Platinum Cash Back Card.

Does anyone else have problems spending the £500 a month? We pay for everything on CC and pay it off in full (to get rewards basically). But I find nowhere really takes Amex!

We managed to spend £445 on the first month (and we took the car in for a repair which cost £250-unfortunately that didn't register on the first bill-GRRR!) so missed the £500 spend threshold to get the £100 bonus on the current deal.

    What shops are you trying?

    Even Tesco take AMEX.

I have no problem, all supermarkets, petrolstations and department stores (even M&S which at one point only accepted its own store card) take Amex. So that me pretty much done. For Holidays all airlines and hotels I book with also take Amex. Paypal takes Amex so that all my ebay purchases as well.
