What travel insurance for diy holiday ....

After weeks and weeks of trawling the internet I have finally booked our summer 2011 holiday - flights with easyjet and separate accommodation. Just wondering what would be the wisest travel insurance to go with for this type of holiday (Spain)

If you go away twice or more a year it may be easier and cheaper to get an annual policy. That way you can always pop away for a last minute deal without worrying about insurance or risking forgetting about it.

It doesn't make much difference to the Ts and Cs whether its annual or single trip, however usually is cheaper if you go away more than once.

The main problem with DIY holidays is that if you have problems with one part of it - usually the flight - you are still liable for the costs of the other bits - e.g. the accommodation/hire car/transfers you were unable to use - some travel insurance companies do offer insurance against such "indirect losses" (thats the term I think they use).

I normally cover my holiday by (a) getting some reasonable travel insurance and (b) arranging the holiday in such a way so if something does go pear shaped I will not loose out too much - this is things such as not paying in advance for accomodation, having a Plan "B" for example if the local transportation is on strike and so on.

Last year I used Swiftcover as they ticked most of the boxes, and got scheduled airline failure cover as an add on. Other policies which were tailored towards DIY travel were M&S, Axa and Endsleigh, amongst others.

I will need to buy insurance for next years holiday soon so will also welcome any pointers to who is now good for independent travel insurance.
