Transferring files between two laptops using wireless connection?

I have a Mac notebook and an Asus laptop that I would like to transfer files between. Can I use the wireless connection on each to transfer files.

They are not attached to any network at the moment as my son has both away from home at the moment.

It's possible but you need extra hardware in the shape of a wireless hub, which would not set up easily between a Mac & PC. Next option is a wired hub - again a bit problematic as to whether you want the hassle of connecting the 2 systems. If you just want to transfer files occasionally, the easiest, & probably cheapest method is to buy a decent sized USB pen drive/memory stick/call it what you like & transfer files using that.

You do not need an access point to connect two wireless enabled computers, you can setup what's known as a 'peer-to-peer' or 'ad-hoc' network.

It's easy enough to setup on a PC (and probably a mac - but I don't use macs so couldn't say). Did a quick Google and the following page looks like a good start:
