Cheques

Hi
Do all cheques clear at the same time 3 or 4 working days?
My other half has just started work and this month and she has been paid by a cheque.
She has to pay crippling childcare costs for our 4 year old out of her wages which are £350+ a month for 12 half days!!!
I pay all the bills with my wages but found the money for last month as they needed a month in advance.
She has paid her cheque into the bank today but the next months fee is due in the morning , if she paid them by cheque would it clear after her paycheck has or do they all clear at different times?
I do not get paid till Monday and we just cannot afford to do it any other way as the Mortage etc all go out tomorrow which we can just about cover.

Every cheque that you pay in to your account will be available for you to withdraw after a set period of time that the bank chooses.

With most banks this is 4 working day, but with some it is 3.

If the cheque is from the same bank as yours, then you may be able to get it to clear instantly.

Don't confuse the cheque being available with the cheque clearing - 'clearance' of a cheque happens at the end of the sixth working day after you pay it in, by which time you can be sure that it won't bounce. Even once the cheque is available (3/4 working days), it can still bounce if it's been cancelled.
  • We are most worried about the cash going from her account before the wages go in so if the nurserys bank makes the funds available to them after 1 day they still would not be taken from her bank till her paycheck clears?

If you take the cheque into the bank which the cheque came from IE barclays etc with some ID and the wage slip.

The bank may allow you to withdraw the money without it having to be paid into an account at the branch managers descretion.

  • She banks with Natwest and her paycheck was Lloyds so she will be paying with a Natwest cheque into whatever the nursery's bank is.

So then she would need to take the cheque to lloyds with some ID and there wage slip and see if the bank will let them have the cash without it being paid into an account.

If lloyds say no you will just to have to pay the cheque into an account and wait for the cheque to clear.

  • You could also try speaking to the nursery and explaining the situation.

the cheque is almost certain to have account payee only written on it which means it must be paid into the persons named on the cheques account

I dont think it will make any difference they may still be able to cash it without paying it into an account. Some banks have an with for example recruitment agencies etc to cash there cheques and there account payee only.
