Quick question re item not as described

I bought an item for £20 it has damage to the top of the item which unfortunately makes the item worthless to a collector (which I am). Contacted seller who is quite happy for me to send item back.
However the address is a barracks also they do not do refunds on the postage which will cost me £5+

They have been most helpful in that I can send it back and a very quick response to my questions,

However if i send the item back I am going to be £5+ down on the transaction with nothing to show for it. Without damaging the seller how do I get the return postage back?

Unfortunately even if you open a dispute you will be asked to return it before a refund is given.
I take it that it's old damage that the seller didn't mention? If that's the case then you could contact the seller again saying that you feel having to pay to send something back that you wouldn't have bid on had you known that it was damaged & ask if they will cover the return postage.
If they won't then all you can do is give neg feedback & poor stars for item description, if the damage wasn't in the listing. I would return though after opening a SNAD dispute through paypal & sending back only when they tell you to. It will have to be sent back tracked, adding to the cost.

You can do it the other way round, i.e. send back tracked then open a dispute if you don't get your money back. Personal experience only tells me that a barracks is a definite for tracked mail. I had two army wives buy from me and they asked for that method as, in their words, loads of stuff goes missing.
