Hello
Myself and mu Mum are thinking about going to York for a few days next month, can any recommend anything in particular to do or not to do.
We are looking at getting the train and staying at a permier inn (not sure what one in blossom street - both have good reviews on tripadvisor) Think we are going to go to Harrogate for the day too.
Any advice would be great many thanks

York Minster, York Castle Museum and the National Railway Museum are good to visit. Or wandering around the City Centre streets such as The Shambles. The man without a signature.0

I can particularly recommend Castle Museum.
Worth having a look to see if the York Boat is still going.
Have a look at the York website to see if there are any 2 for 1s or special offers.
I love York, just spend a couple of hours wandering, go down the Shambles and be sure to look above eyelevel before you go down it.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Thanks, I've been on the website and looks like there is loads to do, I have been before but it was about 20 years ago and I can't remember it at all!0

I visit York quite often, I dont live very far away and my OH's sister lives just inside the city walls, so free parking for us:j
Museum gardens is nice too.
(Dont go to the Yorvik Centre, its really crap and expensive.)
You really will enjoy it, its quaint, have a walk down by the river,
There are some big shops obviously but stick to the old bits.
I always say York is such that you could walk all day and end up back where you started from without realising it.
Where are you coming from and where in York are you staying,
If you havent booked yet i can send you the Travelodge saver site to play around with. Let me know ifyou want it.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Harrogate is lovely, and there's a good train service from York. If you have time, stop off at Knaresborough, a very pretty town, which is on the same line.0

I agree with others and I felt ripped off with Yorvik
Some good places that they recommend I go to York often myself its nearest city to me
PS you could go to Scarborough for day0 -
Thanks, coming from Scotland, well just over the border going to go via. Train yucg easier. N thanks again0

An evening ghost tour in York is a must . There are many that set off from various points most evenings . we've done quite a few of them and they really are great fun. Best one we did was the "original ghost walk " that departs nightly at 8pm from the Kings arms on the river ouse just below ouse Bridge. http://www.theoriginalghostwalkofyork.co.uk/index.html
The york castle museum was another unexpected favourite of ours. Not a traditional museum at all and a good laugh . you can also visit the cells beneath and see !!!!!! Turpins Cell.
Theres a really lovely little tea shop /come snack & breakfast bar in the little row of shops opposite . We always pay that a visit whenever in York.
Another must is a complete walk around the Walls . Pick up the little leaflet from the tourist office detailing the points of interest and history along the way. It's a nice way to spend a morning or afternoon niping of the wall at various points along the way.
Yorvik sits unchallenged so far at the top of our "biggest tourist let downs " of all time . cost us about £60 to go in . went on a ride thingy around viking mock ups and must of been back out within 15 mintues . complete anti climax. dont bother .
As mentioned above a walk along the river is a must too . We always prefer to stay at the fossgate/ fulford rd end walk across the little blue bridge and into the centre and back along the river . We always dream of having one of those apartments with the big balconies that look over the river .
Can you tell we just love York.0 -
Thanks everyone
Hoping to book it tonight, going to go with Premier inn - the one at liverpool was fab and the breakfast was great!
Someone else mentioned about the ghost tour thing, I'll def look into that.
Think we are going to go to Harrogate for the day when we are there, heard Winter Gardens (pub) is worth going to so will go there and possibly the baths, not sure though
Just hope the weather is dry!0 -
The Winter Gardens is actually a pub (Weatherspoons)
But still nice inside. Worth having a look at the architecture.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0
