Signed up to Next Directory account wrongly?

I bought some clothes on the Next online website and opted to pay by credit card as a one-off transaction. Instead I ended up signed up to have a Next Directory account with monthly statement (i.e. the clothes weren't paid for) and having supposedly agreed to receive the Next Directory every season for £3.75.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I wonder if there was some particuarly cunning box which I did or didn't tick but I KNOW I opted for credit card payment when it was a choice between that and the account at some stage in the proceedings, and I was charged postage which was only the case if you opted NOT to get an account.

I'm really annoyed. If I'd ignored an email which came through later (not the one confirming my order) I'd have been in debt to them a month later and been charged interest. And I've had to pay for the phone call to sort it out.

It's a common practise by Next to open an account for you on online orders.

Same thing happened to me with very.co.uk. ordered and paid for a tv with my Debit card, next thing i know i ve got a credit account with them!
  • It happened to me when I entered a 'free prize draw' in store a few years ago in Next. I'm always very careful with the tick / don't tick boxes but later received a catalogue through the post and confirmation that my account was open (along with a charge for the catalogue!) I was extremely angry and vented my feelings over the phone. I wish I had taken it further as it turned out they had run a credit check on me to open the account which I understand is illegal unless they have your consent. Next seem very underhand in their practice and I wouldn't entertain anything to do with them again.

I have just managed to do the same thing :( I also opted for the one off £3.99 delivery charge so that I could pay now and avoid setting up the credit account. (I had been hoping to find a box to put a free delivery promotional code in, which I didn't find?) So I now have a credit account. Having read some of the FAQ's it states that you must ring them up if you want to pay now by credit/debit card. I don't remember seeing that as one of the options? I'm also now a little worried that they are going to send me lots of directory's and charge me for them. Can I ask how you managed to sort out your situation? Thanks
