Lloyds banking...

Is it true that Lloyds TSB cannot give you a current account (or any other account) if you have an account with another bank?

Hmm, was in the bank standing behind this woman wishing to open a current account. Advisor told her if she had an account with another bank account she could not set up a Lloyds account

Well, Fiddlestick says it's not true, the woman and you have experienced the opposite...

I may have to have a look at their terms. If it is true it's a stupid rule. Anybody can set up an account with them and the following week set up another with a different bank; what would they do close your account if they found out...?
  • I think some banks take this approach with basic bank accounts, but I've never come across it personally with standard current account applications.

There will be hundred thousands of people who have opened a Lloyds current account with Vantage for the 4% interest who have current accounts elsewhere.

Found nothing so far in the terms and conditions for Personal accounts. However in their terms for the Student account they say the following:

''Terms and Conditions applicable to the Student Account.
Our agreement with you is made up of general conditions
(contained in the Personal Banking terms and conditions leaflet)
and additional conditions. These include the conditions below
and the Banking Charges guide which contains our standard
fees. If there is any overlap or conflict between the additional
conditions and the Personal Banking terms and conditions,
    the additional conditions apply.
    Eligibility.
To have a Student Account you must be 17 or over, be resident
in the UK for at least three years and be studying for (or
have applied for a place on) a full time course that lasts for
a minimum of two years or be on a one year access course
leading onto a full time degree.
You can only have one Student Account with us in your sole
name and you cannot have a Student Account with another
provider. You must tell us if you are no longer eligible for
    the Account.''

My personal experience is that Lloyds TSB were happy to open me an account, knowing full well that I already had accounts with RBS and HBOS.

Presuming this is just a normal current account (not one of the basic ones) I'd love to see how that works in practise if, say, someone wants to transfer their current account to Lloyds.

"I'm sorry sir, you cannot open an account with us since you have an account at BarcWest bank. If you'd like to close that down, then come back to us when it's closed we'll be more than happy to open an account for you."

It's basically none of Lloyds' business how many current accounts you have elsewhere, though if they're willing to turn down potential future customers in this manner....

Disclaimer: my main current account is with LTSB. It is not my only current account.
    Conjugating the verb 'to be":
-o I am humble -o You are attention seeking -o She is Nadine Dorries
