Hungry baby formula?

My baby is only 1 week old and i dont think he is getting full enough from his feeds. He is feeding every 3 hours between 90-120 ml. he will wake up before the 3 hours wanting fed. i thought maybe it was a comfort thing and have tried everything else but he will not settle until he is fed so i think it is definatley hunger now. if i do give in and feed him before the 3 hours he takes about 40 ml and goes back to sleep, i am all over the place with my feeds

midwife is coming out to see me tomorrow so will mention it to her but was just wondering if anyone else has tried the hungry baby formula and what did they think of it?

At just a week old most babies are feeding every 2 hours, if he's almost maing it to 3 he's doing really well. He won't be able to go to 3-4 hours for a fair few weeks yet.

I'm no expert but that sounds completely normal for a little baby:)

Daisy is 3 weeks and sometimes wants food every 2 hours, sometimes only has a bit, other times has a lot. I'm not worried as she's still very small. We'll hopefully get into a better feed routine as she gets older;)

    Hello OP,

I haven't bottlefed mine but I reckon babies are babies, however they're fed...

If your baby is getting anywhere past 2 hours between feeds, he's doing fine.

The trouble is, your baby hasn't read the baby book which says he should be fed every 3 hours!

Don't worry about it at all - just feed him when he's hungry, cuddle him in between and get yourself some sleep.

Hope you are feeling ok only a week after giving birth and please be assured, all new mums feel a bit lost with feeding etc as unfortunately, babies don't come with a manual.

    Best wishes

hello and congratulations on yoru bundle :D

As others have said if he's going for 2 hours between feeds he's doing well! It's exhausting isn't it.

Some babies find it hard to settle, particularly at this age. Some people use soothers (dummies). We didn't, so I can't offer advice, but I'm sure someone else can. I suspect that its a little early for that at only a week old.

personally, I wouldn't recommend the hungry baby formula. Its an individual choice though. I believe its recommended baby is at least 6 weeks before you consider hungry baby milk - something to do with digestion, but your HV is the best person to avise you on that. I know some guidance has changed in the last year or so, and she/he should have the most up to date information.

Its an exhausting, but lovely time. Make the most of all the snuggling on the couch together.

    Congratulations!
Agree with the others, babies will often feed frequently and in little amounts at that age (their stomach size is tiny!).
I had the opposite problem with DS in hospital- had to wake him to feed him (was breastfed) but once we were home he settled in ok. Can anyone else (partner ?) do one night feed...?

  • as the others have said that sounds about right there stomachs cant take much so little and often is the only way, when he's more settled in a few weeks you could try giving him a little cool boiled water to tide him over until his next feed as they can get into a habit of snacking on little bits and it throws them out of a routine.

My little one is 8 weeks and still wakes up every 3 hours around the clock to be fed, i could try hungry baby formula now but i've avoided it as it made my first daughter really constipated when i tried it with her. Its not really advised until there at least 6 weeks as it is 'thicker' and they struggle to digest it sometimes.
  • hiya thanks for the replys! i didnt realise they could feed as often as every two hours!! i know that sounds stupid but everyone was telling me it "should" be every 3-4 hours and had me thinking he must be really hungry :rotfl: its just hard because he takes a completely different amount every time and i end up wasting lots of formula!

Your baby may also be thirsty. You could try a little coiled boiled water.
