Brit spending abroad.

Hi, I've been searching through the forums and i've learned a lot about bad experiences and different options in terms of credit cards to use abroad etc., but nothing the relates directly to my situation, so sorry if this has been answered before.

between me and my girlfriend, we have a gold barclaycard, a capital one classic and the dreaded vanquis gold card too (it always gets paid in full). I have a debit card/account with barclays, and my partner has a natwest account.

We're going to be travelling to rome & new york soon both for a few weeks, and i'm not sure of the most cost effective option when i'm spending abroad.

In the past i used pre paid currency cards, but i'm not really in a position to pay for flights/accomodation AND the £3500 spends we're going to go through in cash up front (i'd need to buy the currency in the UK)

So... What's the best option for spending overseas for me?

P.S, It's worth pointing out that i can't get any additional lines of credit (my mobile phone default in 2005 is why) but I've tried for lower interest cards etc and have been universally declined so I'm relying on the above options only.

Cheers! :)
