BT Fon

Is anyone using this Wifi service provided by BT?
I am thinking of starting to use it on my commute to work, and wanted to gauge the satisfaction level of this community.
It will barely be used for email purposes, so that I can catch up before I get to work.

  • I'd be interested in knowing too. Do I have to be using the black bt homehub to be allowed to use it too? How do I log on etc?

I have used it at Starbucks along with BTOpenzone on my iPhone. A little slower than normal broadband, just not much good for gaming :-) But checking e-mails etc, I would say it is fine

    Two things

    1. If you can, opt-in to this service at home off your BT total broadband router. This will give you unlimited wi-fi minutes instead of a finite amount (sorry can not remember the amount)
    2. Use a VPN. The only downside to the open/free networks is the lack of security between you and the network server. It is usually open and therefore easy for someone to intercept your information

Registering is easy. just log onto the fon site and opt in. BT will send an upgrade message to your home hub within a couple of days usually, and that does the work for you

Basically a way to provide secure communication over an unsecured network.

    As Poppy has said

Though do not confuse with VPL...............which is something totally different :A;)

Have a look around. If you are using a laptop you have a good selection of free VPN's around. iPod/iPhone etc, it is very limited

Just bear in mind, it will slow your surfing speed down a little, as the information you send/receive is routed through the VPN first (wherever in the world it is) then to your destination
