Help for nursery costs in school?

Our little un has started nursery in her school this month doing half day as thats what they do. She also gets a 1/2 day extra free per week (meaning 1 full day per week) as part of the schools scheme where they offer the chance for children to stay in all day. The extra half days cost £8.50 per day.

Now we dont really have the extra funds (more so with xmas coming up etc) to send her in the other 4 days but feel she would benefit from it.

Now 1 of the other mothers told my partner that there is additinal tax credits or something that can be applied for to help pay for the extra costs. Now she works we dont, is the extra credits only for those in emnployment or is it available for all?.

  • Is it the Working Tax Credits that your friend is referring to? In order to receive those you do need to be working - there's a specific portion of it that is childcare related expenses.
  • Ok, fair enough thanks for the reply. We will prob just let her do the full days as and when we can we feel.

And to get help from tax credits for it both parents have to be working at least 16hours plus per week.
  • Both parents have to be working a minimum of 16 hours each per week, and you can claim the amount you pay (excluding the free session) of which a maximum of 80% of the childcare costs can be paid depending on the household income.
