Cottage Plaster Ceiling

Hi
I think that that is how my kitchen ceiling is described. It is awful and I was looking for a quick way of smoothing it out. I am DIY illiterate so please be gentle. I want to avoid a wooden ceiling and the thought of chipping it away sounds like a job that will take forever. Is there such thing as a paint that will cover it or do I have to go for a plaster finish.
Any help woul be appreciated.

Hi
Sorry I was not clear. Its a very rough plaster finish ceiling, The reference to wood was that I did not want to clad it.

If you want a nice flat finish then there is 2 ways you can go.
1, is to apply bonding coat to even the ceiling out then apply a couple of coats of multi finish.
2,Is probably the easiest, overboard the whole ceiling then skim it.
Once done you will have a loverly flat ceiling.I dont think there is a paint that will do what you want.
Hope this helps.0
