BT's line rental reduction not what it seems

BT offer a reduction in your line rental if you sign up to a year's contract in advance (today's the last day), and MoneySavingExpert refer to it in their latest issue. What neither say is that if you choose this option you lose the discount on paperless billing. And guess what, they cancel each out! No saving there for those of us who have always opted for paperless billing ...

But for those who haven't (not many on MSE I hope), lending BT £133 or so for a year to save about £24 is better than you could get in a savings account (it amounts to an interest rate of about 18½% I think).GeordieBoy1 wrote: »BT offer a reduction in your line rental if you sign up to a year's contract in advance (today's the last day), and MoneySavingExpert refer to it in their latest issue. In any case, the line rental saving is £39.60 and the loss of paper-free discount is only £15 so one doesn't cancel the other out.
However, the chance of signing up for paper-free discount again after the year is up is somewhat remote.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
I think it's better than that. BT are quoting a saving of £39.60 which I think is the correct saving if you don't get the paper free discount. So you save £24.60 over the paper free price. Also you are not really lending it for a year. You would be paying part every month or 3 months according to billing. So really only for about 6 months. Then there is the additional 50p per month it is going up.0

Thanks Heinz and hgm. You're right and I'm wrong, now I've done the maths again (doh). :rotfl:0
