British Gas Problem

I moved into my flat in Decemeber last year. The supplier is British Gas. When I moved in I signed up on their website and for ages it said processing my order or application (in fact it still says that when I go on) I have sent emails and tried to ring (albeit not too hard as they should be chasing me not the other way round)

Last night I got in and had a card requesting a metre reading. I am worried now that I am going to get stiffed for the full amount I owe. I work it out to be around £700 if not more. 932m cubed used since last year

I know I owe this and am willing to pay but I cant afford it if they demand it before christmas.

What would you recommend I do? Can I spread the cost over a few months do you recon?

Thanks
Dave

  • Hi Dave,

This should be easy enough, but all depends on the advisor that you get at BG, it is possible to spread the debt out, and i know with our company we can if needed spread out UPTO 2 years without the need of authorisation. My experience with Bg is they try and collect it within 3-6 months, but if they won't do it over longer, then you could escalate further through complaints. I had a similar problem a couple of years ago, and had to take it to energywatch at the time, to get it spread over longer, but it got done.

British gas will set up a payment plan and spread it over 12 months including your ongoing consumption.

Call them with the reading and arrange this then you can rest easy. Of course the amount will be less if you have put any money aside to pay.

As above - it may be worth 'double checking' that you are billed on the tariff you asked for, and not the standard one. 0800 048 0202.
