If it's first registered before 1980 it only needs the vin number somewhere, or you can get a plate made and attach it somewhere. After that it needs the correct vin plate for the mot. If it's got a current mot it's easier, but depends on the tester if he's relaxed or not.
Stamped somewhere on the van will pass for most, before 1980 some won't even try to look for it.

Is it a Japanese import, such as the Mazda Bongo?

If so, Japanese VIN numbers are much shorter than western ones, typically consisting of a 3-10 digit chassis code which identifies the specific make and model, followed by a unique 6 digit number.
  • thks for your replies.

Its a 1992 Fiat Dicatou (sp?). it has a current MOT.
we asked for the VIN number so we could check it out but the owner came back and gave us only the Reg on it, so not sure if he misunderstood what we were looking for OR if it doesn't have one at all?

    german import i think

The number should be in the drivers footwell in the step part behind a plastic tag. These pop out easily with a slot head screwdriver.

I had a '51' reg and have an '06' of these at the moment and mine are here.

Always check it. It takes 2 minutes to do while you inspect the vehicle.

Vehicles like that are/were worth a lot of money, Lots of motorhomes are stolen.

It could have been stolen from the UK many years ago and exported, Check it very carefully
you dont want to find it being towed as it belongs to someone else or an insurance company.

I would contact them again and insist on the chassis number. HPI it with a proper reputable company
not a cheap text check service with no warranty.
