Changing From BT to Sky

Hi
Wonder if anyone can help. I only have my telephone line from BT everything else is with Sky. My BT phone bills have been averaging around £16 per month and we probably only make a few calls a week. Sky are offering line rental at £11.00 per month which is cheaper. I have now received a letter from BT to say that they will charge £56.35 to stop my account. Does anyone know why they charge so much? Is there any way to get out of these charges? Seems rather high to stop a phone line! I'm trying to save money!
Many thanks

Hi
I've dug out the original paperwork and it doesn't say that it's for any set time. We've been with BT since May 2008.
I might have to ring them0
