Motor insurance quote; how do I know whether accident was my fault?

It could be someone elses fault say for example the council's fault if they failed to fix a pot hole and my car hit it and crashed.
Another example might be a lorry that was leaking oil, and my car following it slipped on the oil and crashed.
Or my car was driving over a bridge and the bridge collapsed due to flooding (like in Cumbria last winter) then that is not my fault (yes I know the police closed the bridges on that occasion but they didn't close them straight away).

So how can I tell if an accident is my fault, or not?

And you claim you are how old, 43?

If I hit your parked car while I'm driving, is it my fault, or the brewing company's?

One way that this could happen is if the car is taken away for analysis after a second crash, they might notice the damage from the earlier crash and identify it as such.

Well you learn something new every day don't you. I'm not a troll.

You could have bought the car with the earlier damage already there.

So what did you do as you haven't said???

This is trolling of the lowest order, where have all the entertaining trolls gone?
Meanwhile I am off to the police station to turn myself in for the sweeties I stole at the age of 5 from Woolworths ( I simply cannot get to sleep at nights for the guilt of it).

Lots of childish mud slinging in this thread :(

    To answer the OP's questions:

    I crashed my car
This statement speaks for itself. No-one else crashed it and it didn't crash itself. All crashes (fault or not) should be reported when asked for by an insurance company. It would be foolish to lie when a future payout could be compromised.
My insurance company never told me whether they thought I was to blame. And there was no police involvement so I can't ask them.
Am I right in assuming that you told an insurance company of this before but they could not apportion blame? If so, then there's no covering it up, so just be honest. Not all crashes increase your premium. If further information is asked for, give it honestly. If the company are understanding, it shouldn't be a problem. Stating that no claim was made on your policy should help your case.

If you wish to go into brief details of the crash in question, I'll be happy to advise.

Hi, if I understand the situation as explained so far, you had an accident, reported it to your insurance company but there was no claim.? The risk therefore would be that when you get your renewal or proof of no claims from your current insurer it could mention this and upset your new insurance if you haven't told them. The situation would be different if you have not reported it to your present insurance company.

    [QUOTE=neil9327;37068466

I had one accident when I crashed my car, mine was the only car involved, there was no third party damage <snip> My insurance company never told me whether they thought I was to blame.
    [/QUOTE]

From the OP it reads as if he notified his insurance company of the incident at the time (possibly because he thought he could claim for the damage, but discovered that he wasn't covered under 3rd Party fire and theft?)

If that is the case, then the earlier incident will have been logged on the insurance data base and should be declared as a fault accident (fault = no other person involved to take the blame)

This would never happen, as even brand new cars can have damage on them that is repaired prior to sale as a new car, the only time an Insurance company would have an interest in previous damage is if it wasn't repaired properly and may have caused the crash, basically if the car is repaired properly it is very difficult to tell.
