Well I'm pretty late to the card-making party aren't I?!

I started out of necessity, I had £5 to my name and it was Dad's birthday and Father's Day, so I nipped into The Works and came out £2.49 poorer, but with a bag full of cards and bits&pieces. Sitting down to my desk I quickly realised I had absolutely no clue what I was doing, but by that point I was commited to the task.

After much sticking my fingers together and freaking out about having made both cards too feminine (blue/purple/gold - but everything was sparkly) I was done, and really happy with the results.

I'd post pictures but I was so keen to get them off to him that I didn't think to take photos. And now they have vanished! :( Not turned up in the post after 3 days. Bad mojo Royal Mail!

Still, totally addicted to the process now. Everything I see gets pocketed for The Cards - cute free postcards in shops/cinema especially.

QUESTION! I noticed in one of the *many* previous threads someone saying they used the ribbon from inside clothes that would be used instore on hangers... how would you attach such slender ribbon to the card? thinly piped glue? I would have thought that would make the ribbon bumpy.

mouldydc  Hello. I tend to use a few small dots of glue along the length at intervals rather than the whole thing. Or you can hide it behind something so you don't notice the bump. Or just make tiny bows with it. Hope that helps. Welcome to the madhouse :)

    Hallo!

    Thanks for that, perfect answer!
Has there been any kind of "idiot's guide to card-making kits" compiled in the vast recesses of this forum?

Like, do I need the fancy pizza cutter style thingy if I'm really good with scissors? Is a ruler okay, or should I get a set square, what on earth is a brad you know, daft questions like that. :D

Hello :) I don't think we do have such a guide tbh. I managed for years with a small cutting mat, ruler and a craft knife. Since buying a guillotine I would never go back to the knife and mat but got on ok at the time. If scissors work for you then go with scissors. Brads are fancy paper fasteners so they go through your paper and have little legs that splay out to secure them, does that make sense. One tip I swear by is not to use expensive glues, I use bog standard PVA glue (usually Anita's Tacky glue) to stick almost everything, use it sparingly and a pot will last for months ;)

i was thinking a guillotine would be a good investment, with scissors and a craft knife for the fiddley bits in decoupage (big fan).
I think I get what you mean by brads - like paper fasteners, leg-wise, but pretty than brass circles!

Excellent tip on the PVA BTW, I was nearly suckered in by fancy-pants glue the other day but it was out of my price range. I also really liked using the bostick glue-dots (which I *whisper* took from work. :))

Now if only there were more reasons to make cards!

Hi Mouldydc welcome to the thread, lots of reasons to make cards, join in birthday card lists and challenges. Would your local charity shop like some hand made cards, do you work somewhere with people that might be interested in buying them. If non of the above apply just treat it as therapy and play away.:rotfl:

Post 8655 gives details of the current challenge here and you still have 24 hours left

Oh gosh, I couldn't imagine anyone wanting them for money!

I had thought about making gift tags for fun (and practice) and giving them to one of our local charity shops to sell/give with purchase.

Challenges and birthday lists I'd DEFINITELY be up for OAP1945!
    -Dashes off to post 8655!

ETA: Ah, won't be able to enter this one - I'm painting flats at the theatre tonight and working tomorrow. Next one; I'm there!
