I have a joint bank account with my ex husband (Lloyds TSB). Me and my husband had an overdraft of £600. We separated in August 2006 and i notified the bank of the separation and stopped my salary going in and anything coming out of the account. My husband agreed to pay £20 a month, but stopped paying this. I was informed by my solicitor to not make any payments as if i had paid £300 and my husband didn't pay the other £300, then i would have to repay my husbands as well.
Is there anything i can do to come to an arrangement with the bank to transfer a debt of £300 to my solo account and take my name of the joint account and leave my husband to pay his £300. Would this happen even if my husband agreed in writing to do this.

A bank is very unlikely to agree to this, they want to maximise their chances of getting the money back so to them it makes sense to keep 2 people liable for the full amount. I think te only time they might do anything like this or specifically assign the debt to just one of the joint holders would be if it is ordered by a court as part of a divorce settlement.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0
