Very high renewal quote

In the post this morning was the renewal quote for our house insurance it was £846, last year it was £582 it is with Norwich Union and the house is a five bedroom detached approx 12 years old made of bricks, tiled roof in other words nothing out of the ordinary. Anyway did not like the quote at all so phoned the broker and got a policy from MMA with better coverage for £220. Is this typical? I do not often shop around for insurance be it house, car or whatever. Perhaps I ought to!

Are you possibly near a low lying area? Is it probable that NU has had a bad claims experience in your locality?

No not in a flood prone area.
  • I would contact them to ask the specific reason why it has increased so drastically. In fact, the increase should have been flagged and they may have had to contact you for further information before issuing the renewal in the first place.

There is now a digital mapping system being implemented that some insurers are taking full advantage of - it may be that your home was previously classed as a low flood risk but is now part of a flood-risk area.

We at work (do not work for NU) have just received an email with all the high tides going forward.

The insurers have decided that some properties that were not formally in a high flood risk area, could potentially now be and we will not insure them going forward, but would of in the past.

This is just in my area of course.

Hopefully now you have seen what a saving one phone call can make you you will shop around in the future :D As well as the obvious buildings and contents insurance I shop around for ins on 2 cars and a motorbike. Its amazing the savings I make for us every year. We never ever pay the renewal price on any of the policies. Most co's, if not all co's, rely on people just getting the renewal notice and paying up.

AS I understand it views on flood risk and others too are not always that refined. With post codes it depends how much is taken in. Unless all the elements are used invluding the final letters. rating decisions can be illogical. MY CODE IS BH## 1. I live at the top end of a hill but the code also includes a alrge river

Well we had a scare a couple of years ago with subsidence, the house was still under the NHBC guarantee so they sent experts round to dig up the garden at the corner of the house in order to inspect the foundations. Then they came back every so often to take measurements. After all of that they said the problem was the hot dry summer of 2003 and tree roots. Apparently the trees were not getting enough water and were sending their roots out to look for it and they were disturbing our house. We were told to keep any trees cut well back. They came back to see that we had done all of that and pronounced it OK. There was no claim made just an observation from the surveyor from the NHBC.
  • We had similar hassle with NU over a non-claim registered as a claim - a cycle got badly damaged when a thief tried to prise it free from the lock, not actually stolen though so it turned out we couldn't claim.

However, come renewal time they said we had this recent claim and it took a couple of phone calls to get it deleted from their records as such, so even if you've moved your policy I suggest calling them to make sure they haven't got your scare logged as claim too, as insurers now share information.

I would run a quote through there online quote system, its highly possible they put premuiums up as most people dont think and just pay it, im sure you will get a cheaper quote online with NU try and see.

Dont forget the cashback sites like Quidco they give £95 for Barclays home insurance and its best to split the contents and building into 2 policys as you will get 2 lots of cashback , my house insurance cost me £0 this year and i actually made £5 profit :j
