If in years gone by that married couples could claim the others tax allowance if one usually woman at home with child...............I am sure my ex husband did this when the pet teen was a pet baby.............and that when I returned to work we simply applied the approate code again......................

Not in the last twenty years:mad: , anyhow! They'll probably introduce this now I've gone back to work:rolleyes: (I'm still in favour, though!)[0

I thought that there used to be 1 allowance per couple and either could choose who used it.
Then it became a personal allowance and you could transfer the "unused" part of your allowance to your spouse.
Not a tax expert thought...I lost my job as a cricket commentator for saying “I don’t want to bore you with the details”.Milton Jones0 -
Everyone always had a tax allowance, married men used to get an additional allowance the confusion here is that single parents could claim it (additional personal allowance) This was in pre child tax credit and working families tax credit days.0

The transitional married couples allowance you describe was abolished in 1999 if I recall correctly.
You can and should aim to claim working tax credits instead.0 -
You can still get it if you were married before 1935 or something like that.Sorry my posts so long - not time write shorter ones.0

Married Couples Allowance is only for oldies, See extract below from
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/pommanual/pomcod/pomcod01103.htmFrom 6 April 1999 the rate of relief for Married Couple's age related allowances is due at 10% and from 2000-01 onwards Married Couples allowance is only due if at least one spouse was born before 6 April 1935. On or after 5 December 2005 Married Couples and Civil Partners can claim the Married Couple's allowance (MCCP) if at least one spouse or civil partner was born before 6 April 1935.0 -

To make it clearer
NO
If you read the post fully, the poster is talking about a situation they recall, 1 no longer in place.
Personal allowances are exactly that, personal. There are 1 or 2 exceptions which next to nobody qualifies for, but in the main use 'em or lose 'em0 -

I would be very interested to hear the 1 or 2 exceptions which next to nobody qualifies for - I have worked for HMRC for 20 years and I know of no such exception where a PERSONAL allowance can be transferred!!!I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes0
