Kwik Fit rant

The wife booked her car in for it's MOT with Kwik Fit yesterday as she had been given a voucher for a free MOT. Anyway the car failed and we were given a list of things that it had failed on and they quoted us £494 to sort everything to get it through.
To cut a long story short I remembered seeing Kwik Fit on Watchdog last week so got a local garage who I've used for ages to look at it and asked them if they could quote me on the cost of getting it through it's MOT. They phoned me and told me it would cost a total of £112.10 and gave me a list of things it needed which we compared to Kwik Fit's failure sheet and discovered that there were things on the list from Kwik Fit that were fine and wouldn't cause an MOT failure. I asked the garage if they would do the work and asked them to MOT it for us which they did for a total of £160.10.
I know Kwik Fit should have given it a free re-test but it was easier to get the garage to do it and pay them as we hadn't actually paid Kwik Fit.
I can't believe we almost got charged over £330 more than what it actually needed. The lesson learnt is to stay away from Kwik Fit and stick with the local garage in future.

you should have contacted VOSA and ask them to inspect the car and report Kwik Fit. VOSA can remove testers licence.

this is why i would always urge anyone considering a "free brake check" with them to run in the other direction! I got caught by this years ago and it cost me a lot of money when there was naff all wrong with my brakes. A friend took his in, they told him the same, he went to another garage and once again, there was nothing wrong!!
I know it seems silly but well done for not taking their nonsense- so many people would have done!I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Health & Beauty, Greenfingered Moneysaving and How Much Have You Saved boards. I didn't know about the VOSA or I may well have taken that option. I will remember that in the future although i'm hoping that i'll never need to contact them again. If At First You Don't Succeed, Call It Version 1.0

My OH got quoted roughly about £230 for 2 parts of a new exhaust when we had already been quoted £170 from another branch about 20 miles away blooming ridiculous. In the end we got the work done for £130!!!
I heard that the best places for MOT's are the vehicle testing place for council vehicles and legally they have to accept you (through some loop-hole or other) and as a result they have no real incentive to fail your MOT due to them having to get on with the council ones, not sure how you would find one though - me and OH discovered our local one on a trip out maybe worth asking a workman for the council or something just for future reference.0
