Untidy gloss paint

Options
I've gloss painted the skirting boards in hallway (laminate floor) and where I've taken up the masking tape it looks untidy where it has leaked under a little or stretched when I've pulled it up.

What is best to do:-
- leave it until dry
- try to tidy it up when wet

Any advice welcome, thanks

  • Too late now, but rule 1 is don't use masking tape.

Best bet is to use thin card, or newspaper and slide it under the skirting, for those bits that you can't, use nothing and just be accurate and careful.

For your current problem, leave the paint until tomorrow/a few days and scarpe with a screwdriver or similar. This will be a tedious job, and you will never use masking tape again for a similar job.

If its leaked under the tape then you're using too much paint and expecting the tape to stop it running all over the floor. Use less paint and work so as trying NOT to actually get it on the tape unless you have a little upset. Then it won't happen. When you say "stretched" do you mean that you've left the paint to harden before removing the tape. I suspect you do. In that case because you've used too much paint that and the tape have almost become one so that when you remove the tape you start to peel off the layer of paint on the woodwork which has not yet cured.

Solution. Remove all tape. Clean paint off floor with white sprit. Make sure paint on skirtings is fully cured then rub it back again and repaint. This time use the minimum amount of paint keeping it on the woodwork and not slop it all over the tape. Remove the tape whilst the paint is still wet. Actually if you do this properly you'll find you don't actualy need the tape with laminate at all. Removal when wet applies when painting skirtings with carpet in place too
