Just done one of Max's job in a major dept store and they processed the store card before I signed anything. So i've been credit checked (and accepted) and now have to hope they cancel the store card. !!!!!!.

It's pretty illegal to do that without having you read the t&c's first and then sign - so I should imagine that it will make for an interesting report. Hopefully it shouldn't be too difficult to sort out the cancellation.
  • Nah I prefer the phone calls... The website can't negotiate and give you mini-supermarkets, post and petrol for eating a burger, the allocators themselves can though :D

Yeah there are a couple of local ones that have gone up and up in fee's and I am half thinking of taking one (the fee is now at the level I can suffer a burger for) but I am just not sure if I am going to miss out on some mini supermarkets for taking it now... decisions decisions.

It came very close the same happening for me, it was only because they handed the form to me to sign slightly early that it didn't. The member of staff basically admitted that he wouldn't have checked the form was signed before sending the form, at looked a lttle shocked that he'd almost done so.
  • Afternoon all. I need to buy a new digital camera - purely for taking photographs of receipts and for photographs of shops of course, am I right in assuming I can put this down as an expense ??

I expect this would be counted as essential equipment for doing the jobs and therefore classed as an expense for tax purposes.

I think the rule is if you use it ONLY for your work then it's an acceptable expense -but if you were going to use it for leisure as well then only a percentage is tax deductable. Good thing you still have your box brownie for holiday snaps eh ? ;)

I'm finally getting around to setting up a proper spreadsheet for all the jobs I'm doing (have just been keeping a hand written table up until now as I keep putting off remembering how to work excel!!).
Is there anything important I'm forgetting?? So far I have:
MS Company, Date of job, Client & Location, Fee, Reimbursement, Amount spent/costs incurred, and date payed.

I'm not sure what the best thing to do with regards to travel is? Do I work out and keep track of the distance travelled and have a column for that at #of miles x 40p (hmrc mileage). At the moment I'm not driving though as we only have the one car which my Other Half takes to work, so I rely on foot/buses most of the time, except for Sundays and Saturdays when he's not working when we drive.
So do I go by how much I actually spend (ie £1.90 on the bus)?

Are lots of people having trouble with the RE site? I log on- there are some jobs- then they disappear as they scroll down...
I'm sorry if I've missed pages of discussion about this as I suspect from the ALerts thread that I may have but I can't find it when I search...:p

I also include the I.D number of the job :)

With regards to travel costs......... If the £1.90 was spent on the bus for the sole purpose of the MS Shop then claim it and keep the bus ticket receipt. Also keep your petrol receipts for the car if you use it at weekends as you can claim back the petrol.

I do a seperate petrol sheet which I put my home postcode in and the MS postcode. I then go to ViaMichelin which works out the 'real' petrol costs and distance if I put in the petrol price and type of car Im using in the options bit.

I then work out with the given mileage @ 40p per mile and add this to the spreadsheet. Its also good to work out if a job is viable in terms of costs as all the jobs dont take into account petrol costs. Using ViaMichelin I can see how much it will really cost me and how much I claim from the tax man.

I dont know if its an accurate way of costings but it works for me. :)
