About 18months ago i got a laoptop from Carphone Warehouse, when asked about Insurance i said no thanks ill go with my bank because i was covered for loss as well. But the sales men went on to say that there insurance covers for that so i ask him if i was covered for the hole lot ie loss, damage, theft, the hole nine yards and he answered yes,So i decide to go with them. But now ive lost my laptop with all my work on and some very expensive programes on (left on train) i foned up to make a claim and guess what iam NOT covered.

loss on the train can be seen as neglegant, this may be why not covered0

Like PNPSUKNET insurance policies generally only cover theft by forcible or violent means not wreckless abandonment. If they did every Tom, !!!!!! & Harry would be trying to claim for a new laptop once theirs got to a couple of years old saying 'oops I lost it'.
On the plus side you should be able to get back your programmes as these are generally activated by the licence keys which you should have on the product boxes/emails. Just download them free from the net and use your existing keys.0 -
There you go.About 18 months ago I bought a laptop from Carphone Warehouse. When they asked me if I wanted insurance for it I said, "No thanks, I'll go with my bank", because I was covered for loss as well.
But the salesman went on to say that their insurance covers for that, so I asked him if I was covered for the whole lot, i.e. loss, damage, theft, the whole nine yards, and he answered yes. So I decided to go with them.
But now I've lost my laptop with all my work and some very expensive programs on (I left it on a train). I phoned up to make a claim and guess what? I am NOT covered.

It is unusual for an insurer to cover that sort of loss.
If you can show, on the balance of probabilities (i.e. it is more likely than not) that the salesman said it was then FOS would probably deem it to be a collateral and force the insurer to pay if he represented it. If he is deemed independent then his firm might have to pay or at least refund the premiums plus interest.
If you make a complaint to the insurer and they suspect they are in the wrong they mayl probably make a "goodwill" payment to cover it.0 -

Can you not claim for it on your household insurance?0

Nope because its not in the house it only covers stuff that stays in the property :mad:facingthefuture wrote: »Can you not claim for it on your household insurance?0 -

When you get contents insurance for your house there is a section called "all risks."
in this section you can add an amount for things you take out of the house for example you can get it to cover handbag contents, laptops, glasses and mobile phones. The cover can be Europe wide or world wide.*
It's always a good idea to take this part of the policy out and make it equivalent to the maximum amount of goods you are likely to take out of your house in one go.
Yes it is expensive and could amount to 1/3 to 1/2 of the policy value but knowing women who have had their entire handbag snatched it's worth it.
BTW if you are a business woman who wears glasses you are screwed on these policies.
*Always read the small print to see what is excludedI'm not cynical I'm realistic
