Hi- you could make an onion gravy- see deliaonline for recipe. That is really good tasty and quick!

How 'oniony' is it? Unfortunately I have a fussy eater son :( I am sure I can 'fool him' with plenty of other things but onions he will detect, otherwise it would be perfect with our sausage casserole x

Have a look at the recipe- does have Lea & Perrins in it too so have a look. You could thicken the sauce on your casserole with a little flour and add some boiling water and whisk in situ to thicken?

I make onion gravy with fried onions, blob of tomato puree, slug of Worcester Sauce, teaspoon of Marmite, water, thickened with cornflour.

I'm sure if you took the onions out you'd still have a passable gravy.
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

You can use marmite to make a veg based gravy more meaty and brown

I prefer to use Bisto original gravy powder, you make it up in a pan and it makes a really nice gravy that you can add to if you wish. I normally make it up with veg water and add meat juices, but you can add onions, Lea & Perrins etc. It's very nice with a dollop of redcurrant jelly dissolved in it and if you make it nice & thick and add some soy sauce it makes a lovely Chinese gravy just like the takeaway.

My favourite used to be Anthony Worrall Thompsons gravy paste, they were delicious but appear to be discontinued now so I had to go on the hunt for another nice gravy. I'm not keen on any of the granules because I think they have a "fake" taste to them but I do like Bisto Original powder.

I buy Bisto granules as we have a B & M store nearby and they are a lot cheaper than the ones in the supermarket.

I have tried value gravy granules in the past and didn't even get to the stage of pouring the gravy on the food, I binned it, it was disgusting.

I have tried this recipe a few times for Foolproof Pepper Sauce using milk and gravy granules and it is lovely.

Onions are easily detected only if they are in there as pieces - blend the gravy until it's totally smooth. Works for lots of sauces, soups etc.
