Advice on good first time Credit Card for travelling

Hi there
My daughter is 22, and doing a gap year round the world tour. She has not had a credit card before (but has a bank account with a debit card) I was looking to see what would be a good back up credit card for her to take for emergency purposes. She has no outstanding debt, a good (if limited) credit history, and may not even need to use it. Any thoughts?
Cheers, Stu

When she applies she'll be asked for her occupation and income. What are they?

Or are (one of) the parents applying and giving her a secondary card?
  • She works in a residential care home, has done for about 3 years. Her salary is approx £16k gross.

Yeah ask her bank for a credit card as they know a little bit more about her.

If that fails then well she might have to try for the dreaded vanquis card or cap1 classic card think with limited history these would be her best bet if all fails with credit card from bank.

Yep, all good advice above but you could try the Brcalycard pre-application check to see if she could get one of their cards.

Just type Barclaycard pre-application into a search engine.

You know what, I did and it worked for me.

I hate to keep saying it as I am no fan of the place but it is a good way of giving people an "idea" of what they may get without running around applying everywhere :)

I got a Barclaycard when I was a student with no credit history - I think they do special cards for students (or they did back then anyway). The only thing is, the limit wasn't very high - I think they gave me £500 at the beginning. However as she is working and not a student she should be able to get a higher limit. Definitely do as PP's have suggested and try the pre-application check.

If it is for emergencies - but not so urgent that you could not be contacted by phone or text, perhaps a simple prepaid mastercard might be useful? You could top it up online as necessary. No credit checks (unless it is one of the dreaded Tuxedo cards :p)

Mastercard not as usable as VISA in African countries however.
