Fit For Purpose?

Hey,
I bought a pair of offroad clipless pedals for my commuting bike in April '10 from an online cycle company called Chain Reaction. They are sold as off road pedals.
They have just broken after 5 months of road only "short commute to work" useage
I contacted the supplier who said I must return them so they can send them to the manufacturers who will try to repair them under the warranty. If they cannot repair them they will send me a new set. They cannot offer a credit note or refund.
If anyone is interested they are Crank Bros Eggbeaters C. They were on special offer so were cheaper than usual.
I would like to know -
5 months of use at a much lighter level than was described - are they fit for purpose?
Return to manufacturer - I have a contract with the seller not the manufacturer?
Am I entittled to a refund / credit or will I just have to wait 3 weeks to se what happens while my beautiful iron horse languishs in the kitchen cupboard?
Any information would be helpful, any facts / legisltation marvellous.
Cheers for reading folks

There not asking YOU to deal with the manufacturer, they will be doing this so what's the problem? They are entitled to see if it can be repaired. They've said they'll send a replacement if it's beyond repair so again, I don't see any issues. Sounds like the retailer is being reasonable and, more importantly, acting within the law.0

Long Time Lurker, First Time Poster!
I wish they would change those words in the SOGA. Why is it that every consumer that has the wrong idea of consumer law loves to shout those three words constantly?
Is anyone else bugged by this?
Or is it just me?0 -

Ok,
So sending them the pedals to see if they can fix them is within the law and nothing for me to get het up about.
So with those people being bugged by those three special words - please define them for me. What makes something fit for purpose according to the sales of goods act then?
