Discount due to end, when should I switch?

Hi,

My discounted elec and gas with eon is due to finish at the end of November.

When is the right time to switch my suppliers (assuming it is cheaper to do so?) Last time I changed suppliers it took 6 weeks to go from one to the other. If I wait untill the date my discount finishes then I will pay the standard eon rate for those 6 weeks. If I do it too early then I will pay a penalty for leaving early.

Can you request the date you would like your gas and electricy to transfer?

Obviously ... but I think the real issue is assuming you have found someone cheaper how to time the switch so that

    - you don't get switched before current deal ends and have to pay an exit fee, or lose some discount (some deals only apply discount on a complete quarter or even year basis)

    - you don't switch too long after deal ends so that you minimize the length of time you are on the less competitive deal you move to after the fix ends.

Simplest to switch to EON SaveOnline 3/4/5 in November, which does not have exit penalty, so you can switch whenever.

I start the switch 3 weeks before the end of Nov just to be on the safe side.

Hi Roms - Why not wait till 1st week of Nov and then visit the switch sites?

Unless you are anxious to use a Cash-back switch site or find a supplier who really saves money against E.ons tariffs, the chances are that E.on will have a tariff somewhere near the top of the tables, in which case writeto E.on advising them that you want to roll over onto their XX tariff as the present one finishes.

That's what I'm probably going to do (I'm in same situation of an Eon fix ending at end of Nov). From what I can see at the moment there's an Eon tariff that is near (if not at) the top of the comparisons for my usage ... given the hassle of changing suppliers (switching from Npower to Eon last year took ~3-4 months before everyone had agreed that I'd switched as Npower, Eon and the various intermediary organisations seemed to mislay the details of my electricity switch) there would need to be a significant saving to make it worthwhile!

However, I think if you are swithing then one point to remember is that after you have told a company that you want to switch to them nothing happens for several days (?14 I think) as you have a cooling off period to change your mind ... I suppose this is good if you've been doorstepped and realize the next day you've been conned but if you've spent time researching all the options and made an informed choice it can be a bit irritating to have to wait a couple of weeks in case you decide you made a mistake.

    Hi roms

Sounds like you are on either Fixonline 3 or Fixed Price 4. Both of these tariffs finish at the end of this November.

To make sure you receive the full amount of discount applicable to these tariffs you need to finish the contract.

I'm afraid it isn't possible to request a specific transfer date when changing supplier. However, it usually takes between 4-6 weeks to complete.

Therefore, so long as the switch completes after the contract end date, you will receive the full amount of discount applicable to the tariff even if part of this falls within the final bill.

We also have tariffs available with better terms than our standard rates but without any tie-ins. You might want to consider going on to one of these whilst the switch completes (details are on our website). Probably won't save you a lot but everything helps.

Hope this is useful roms. Give me a shout if you need any more info as will be happy to help.
