Mrs_Optimist wrote:Angela D the lady that posted recently had just left an unhappy marriage, and was about to be made homeless because the husband would not let her have the family home to live in with the children.. He had threatened to fight for custody because he stated that she could not home them.. She had £40k equity (if I remember rightly) and was in the same position as the OP but when she questioned disposing of the money so that she could be assisted she was given a right old tongue lashing. What about parents who are single because of violent relationships? Should they be refused state help too?
When they have £40k in equity YES
Unhappy in your marriage is not equal to disabled.0 -
I was shocked at Angela D's post, but can understand some people would feel that way
What is the woman was a victim of domestic violence? would it be different then?0 -
I'm sorry but if people like single mothers took responsibility for their own actions the pot would be more available to help the disabled, the sick and genuinely needy. If you are in a violent relationship then of course the woman or man should be helped back onto their feet, but that's it. Unfortunately it seems to have become a lifestyle choice these days.0

anyhow back to the OP jonnyb1978 - who we are helping
some lenders would take into consideration the potential help on mortgage interest. Have you got your £60k/£70k mortgage quote from only one lender?0 -
This thread was started by an absolute newbie. The direction this thread is taking is of no relevance to the OP at all and would be enough to frighten pretty much anyone off. I apologise to the OP for my outburst and am sorry I can't add any advice.

If this is the way you want to portray MSE then carry on, but I for one have reported one particular post which I find offensive. If you want to dicuss stereotypes, why don't you go and talk about it on the discussion forum? I'm on this forum to read about house prices etc.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

There is really no difference between legally arranging your tax affairs to the maximum benefit such as Rupert Murdoch's zero status
and arranging your benefit affairs so as to obtain legally the maximum advantage.

What a small minded view, and combined with this post....

..... are you suggesting the majority of single mothers "got pregnant" just to claim benefit? :rolleyes:553780080 -
Guys lets get back to helping the OP
My suggestion was if they had only approached one lender - to find out what other lenders will except as income.0 -

Sorry - you have no idea why many single parents are 'single parents and why some people are 'disabled'
I am not making any reference to the poster here but would like to give you an example I know of
1) sinlge parent - in loving relationship - pregnant - parents going up the wall because boyfriend is Asian - him or us - couple had no money and nowhere to live - Asian parents find out - they go up the wall - both banned from seeing each other - reltionship broke down - with nowhere to live and no help the raltionship couldn't take the strain. Girl rejects parents because they ruined relationship - runs away - goes into a homeless hostel - gets council flat and lives alone on benefit while trying to rebuild her life by going to college and gets place at university.
2) 45 year old woman - drinks heavily - gets diagnosed as alcoholic - gets disability allowance+housing benefit+council tax relief - council flat (not homeless hostel because it would aggravate condition) every now and again goes to 'support group' gives up - falls off wagon - turns up at relatives begging money to buy booze - and so it goes on.
Real cases - who is deserving? We shouldn't generalise without knowing the facts. There are probably more people swinging benefits on 'bad backs' than there are single parents. At lest the parents are brining up kids.
Back to the original topic - is it possible for you to rent out your current home for more than it would cost you to rent somewhere near your son (or equal to the cost) ? This would enable you to pay rent to live near your son and keep the house to pass onto your son in the future.
Your other option could be shared ownership.
I would sugest talking to a Housing Association - they are sympathetic to people who need to move to be near realtives/work etc and don't see housing merely as providing bricks and slate over your head as the council do.0
