Asda Returns Policy - proof of terms and conditons

Hi

I recently tried to return a product to asda that was faulty, the item was bought in Aug 2009 - I was advised that because the date of purchase had gone over the 1yr deadline from the day of purchase - that my item could not be returned or refunded.
I spoke with the store manager and requested to why this term was not stated with the purchase agreement (receipt) - she replied with " we do not have to provided that information on the receipt - we have it shown throughout the store" - i couldnt see it?

I believed that it was part of trading standards that terms should be visable when purchasing products from companies? - is this true?
