Advice on Divx Player

I am looking to buy a dvd player capable of Divx playback (e.g. Avi and Mpeg). I have read that you can burn avi's to CD-R and watch them on most Divx players, but can you burn them to DVD-Rs and watch them? I don't want to have to create DVD video discs, just simply use the DVD-Rs I have with multiple AVI files. I have already backed up my AVIs to DVD-R, and don't want to have to burn them to CD-R in order to watch them on a new player.
Thanks for any help.

You can view a list of DivX players here:

the most recommended one I have found is the Philips DVP642 but I am not sure about the availability in the UK.
Have a look at the following website to compare the different layers available:

You can burn divx or xvid to dvdr, all you do is burn them as data files, then just load each one into a proggy like Nero, i can get upto 6 movies onto a dvd disc, there just in a list on screen, just choose and play your file.
ive got a cheap Amstrad player 18 quid and plays everything, but am going to buy a samsung dvd player that upscales normal dvds to hd format, thee about 70 quid, they also play divx and xvid files too0
