Can someone explain why Skobbler uses a fraction of the memory (~ 4MB) on the iPhone as compared to this (~ 295 MB) if they are both sourced from the same data?
I don't know for sure, but I would guess that with navfree the maps were downloaded to the phone, while skobbler accessed them as and when needed?

I downloaded the Free Sat Nav App for iphone/ipad from iTunes (Navfree UK & ROI) today and used it on a short trip to York. It wasn't perfect, but then no Sat Nav that I have ever used has been. This Navfree app worked very well on my iPhone 4 and my only concern was the drain on my battery, which usually lasts a few days. If I was using this as app regularly for long periods then I would need a charger for my phone in my car. Have any other users noticed the drain on their iPhone battery from using this app?
I would definitely recommend this Navfree app!0 -
If the maps are user updatable, how do they prevent abuse?0

I'd imagine that your updates get submitted to the authors of NavFree/OpenStreetMap, and that they'd authorise the changes suggested.

I've used Skobbler (that downloads maps from the phone/data network as you progress through your journey) and NavFree (which has all the maps pre-loaded onto the iPhone when you install it from iTunes), and NavFree gets my vote.
Skobbler just can't reliably maintain a 3G-phone signal long enough and fast enough when you are on a motorway (70mph) journey and as such there's plenty of occasions when I looked at the screen only to see me effectively no-where, flying across a featureless white screen with no verbal instructions.
NavFree does make some silly routings on occasion, but there are a number of different methods (fastest, shortest, most effiecent, etc.) and it looks gorgeous.

I have IPod Touch 3rd gen 32g - downloaded this app just to see what it was like, and it worked! albeit slowly, it tracked my bus journey. So if you've got space, try it; you never know!0 -
Has anyone else had this problem? Not sure how everyone has managed to download this so-called 'NavFREE' app, as every time I've tried to download it onto my iphone, payment details are requested, even though it is a free app. How can this be? So I tried downloading it via my pc/USB cable and the same thing happened again.
Tried calling the 'helplines' - both Apple and O2 - but each has referred me back to the other - and both say they can't help.
I have just updated my iphone and also lost another free app in the process - Sky Sports, which is also asking for payment!
Please can anyone advise?0
