I hope I've got the name right, I'm meaning one of the little machines you put your card into to pay for something in a shop. Does anyone know how a small business would go about getting one, please?

You need to apply for a merchant account with your bank. Good luck with that TBH. Depending on what business you're in, you could have no chance. Also, the fees are quite substantial - a monthly charge plus per transaction.0

Thank you both, blindingly obvious when you think about it (which I clearly didn't!) I will speak to my bank

Speak to your small business manager at your bank branch.
They used to be called PDQ Machines
Check the costs there is normally a monthly fee, this may include the transaction costs. If the transaction costs aren't included look at them very closely, different cards (Visa, Master, Amex, Debit or Credit) charge different % fees it's normally 1.5% or 2% of the transaction.
More small businesses are being forced into Chip & PIN due to less people using cheques and cash, but workout the full costs and compare them with other banks.
I did see an App for an iPhone for small business who wanted to take Chip and PIN payments, not sure if it every got off the ground with it.0
