HSBC incorrect wording on Final Demand

I had a student overdraft with HSBC which I was chased for throughout my final year of uni (I later found out because they had my year of graduation wrong!) and it got to the point last September where I was issued with a Final Demand.
This said (& I'm quoting) 'you have 18 days to pay in full or let us have satisfactory proposals for repayment by instalments or otherwise.' As I had only just started work I decided to pay in instalments rather than borrow a lump sum to pay it off and so returned the Statement of Means to them well within the specified time with an offer to pay instalments & a goodwill payment.
A couple of weeks later I started to receive correspondence from Metropolitan Debt Collection agency, HSBC had passed my debt to them without acknowledging my letter or my payments. When I queried this I was told (in writing) that the information contained in the Final Demand was incorrect and in fact I had only had the option to pay the full amount once it was issued. HSBC could not explain why no-one had responded to my Statement of Means, although they did acknowledge receiving it plus my payment, and did not say that my offer to pay was unreasonable.
Because the debt was transferred my credit rating is now terrible (it was very good in the past) - does anybody know whether I am able to have my credit report altered to reflect HSBC's mistake and if so, should I approach the credit agency or HSBC?
Given that I am now appear to be blacklisted for pretty much all finance I'd be grateful for any advice!

I dont know how your credit rating would be affected but i had some debt passed from HSBC to Metropolitan Debt Collection. They were quite good and let me set up an affordable re-payment plan and froze the interest. May not what your looking for but i hope it helps.0

The only problem is, HSBC can quite easily come back and say "You never sent us a letter", and it's then word against word. Unless you have proof of the letter sent....0

Thanks Rick. Metropolitan weren't particularly helpful / friendly but I paid the debt off within about 3 months so that side of it is all ok now. I'm just left with the repercussions of it all re my credit rating!0

HSBC acknowledged my letter in writing and just said they couldn't see why they hadn't responded to it...0
