New York - recomendations

I am considering booking for my husband and myself a 5 night stay in new york to celebrate both his 50th and our 25th anniversary - I want to keep this a secret from him for as long as I can.

I am looking for recommendations for hotels - I would quite like a small boutique hotel but if you have stayed at an exceptionally good hotel suitable for couples, then I would like to hear about it. Flights are not a prob as he works at an airport and we can use some air industry discounts - so don't mind spending a little more on the hotel.

thanks

  • I stayed at Casablanca hotel just off Times Square for my 40th - it was lovely. Amazing location yet relly quiet inside, not that upmarket but small and friendly with the extras such as free wine and breakfast.
Aim to win in 2013 - a holiday somewhere nice, New York break, treats for family & friends & some cash would be lovely!!!

I really liked the Grand Hyatt at Central Station.
  • Last month I spent a week at Carter Hotel with my girlfriend...and we really liked it, especially my girlfriend)))))) that was my gift to her. The staff is very friendly and the rooms are comfortable and homy. So I strongly reccommened this hotel.
    Good luck!

Not very MSE (!) but we went to NYC on Boxing Day for a week over New Years a couple of years ago and stayed at the Waldorf Astoria - not reasonably priced by any stretch but if you can splash out as a treat and you're getting bargain flights it was gorgeous and exceeded our expectations, if you fancied it but couldn't stay the entire 5 nights perhaps just your last night in NYC.....

Waldorf is often seen a letdown to visitors as it's a little bit aged now.

I've been once and I wasn't really impressed, it isn't cheap either.
  • We had a little apartment just by John's Pizzeria in Bleeker Street; and it was lovely.....I'd always go for apartment over hotel in NYC - we've done both but having that extra space makes a huge difference.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
