What are the benifits of 1920 x 1200 res.?

Options
I`m looking at 17 inch laptops, and mikey mike recommended his sony laptop that had a 1920 x 1200 resolution.

So I`m wondering what are the benefits of this resolution?

Are there any drawbacks to the resolution?

Thanks in advance

Larger amount of desktop real estate. I.e. you could read two documents side by side to compare them. Higher resolution for playing games and watching DVDs. Brag factor?

  • I have a 17" Dell Inspiron 9300 with 1920x1200.

The benefits are that you can fit more on your screen. I'm a software developer so I like being able to see more of my code :-)

However, the disadvantage is that you have to strain to read some websites because everything is quite small in comparison to say 1024x768.

Some people love 1920x1200 - other's hate it. My advice would be to go to a computer shop and find a 17" laptop with this resolution and see what you think.

If you want my opinion, it's better with bigger screens (e.g. 20" or more).

The general recommendation for best quality reproduction on LCD monitors seems to be to use only the native resolution, which for a standard 17" monitor would be 1280x1024!

  • Probably would have advantages with concern to HD video playback! I believe that 1080i requires at least 1920 x1080 pixels!! Would need HDCP compatibility though!!

Refresh rates are important too, to stop fatigue look for around 75 hertz and higher

That's only with regards to CRT's, not TFT's.

TFT's don't quite work like that.

A CRT has to refresh the whole screen constantly (the phosphors at the front of the screen to be exact. They fade quickly after being hit) hence a resolution of 75Hz is preferable so that the screen doesn't flicker. TFT's don't pulsate, they are on all the time, and change per pixel, not as a whole image.

I've actually read that if you are using a VGA or DVI-A connection instead of DVI-D, higher refresh rates may make your screen actually look worse.

I've got a laptop with 1920x1200 on a 15.4" widescreen. The main advantage is that everything is pin-sharp. As someone else said, you can have a couple of docs side by side and no problems reading either. As for the small point size on some websites... you get used to it.

Give it a try in the shop and see if you like it.

    Cheers

I'm no monitor aficionado but the native resolution of a Dell Inspriron 9300 with a WUXGA true life screen is 1920x1200.
