Does this look genuine?

I`m after a laptop, and am dubious about these on ebay. However I`ve noticed this one and wonder whether you think it is genuine, if so I`ll bid on it. Here`s the link

So what do you think?

Thanks in advance

yes i think it looks genuine, but i notice the reserve hasn't been met yet, and if no-one meets the reserve the seller isn't obligated to sell the item - he could set the reserve at £1400, which doens't make is a bargain then!!!

it'd be worth bidding on though, in my opinon - they've got positive feedback
  • Why will he be using so many private auctions?

P.s. Thanks for the quick replies.

    Hello,

Most of the specifications tally up but then again these could have just been copied from the DELL website.

Anyway, like the other posters have said - well worth a bid. Just think what the max you would pay is and put that in. If the reserve is still higher than this then walk away and find another bargain...

    Hope this helps.

Looks dodgy to me, look at the sellers previous auctions they're a completely different style to this one, and the listing has a 'contact us' link that links to a different account, also the listing doesn't accept PayPal but the seller's previous listings did, could be a copied listing on a hijacked account! Tread very carefully with this one, a phrase involving a barge pole come to mind!
  • Thanks Jezcooke.

Looking at the the contact us link to another ebayer sounds very dodgy.

Looking at there previous auctions there layout is very different, no use of other colours, no paypal and no mention of bids from people with less than 5 feedback or 97%.

    All in all dodgy.

Does this strongly suggest a hijacked account?

If so can anything be done about it?

    Thanks

I'm 110% sure this is a scam on a hijacked account, they've done it before too:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Dell-XPS-Gen-2-Laptop-Notebook-2Ghz-TV-More_W0QQitemZ120035544221QQihZ002QQcategoryZ177QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

You can report it to eBay but it's on a one day listing (another sign of scam for a high value item!) so they probably won't react in time. You could email the current bidders to warn them if you were so inclined (though technically this is against ebay rules as 'auction interference').
  • Thanks Jez. Why does informing the account holder that their account has been hijacked break ebay rules, surely doing so would be a positive move for all involved except the hijackers?

What did you search for to find the previous auction?

And is this previous auction too recent for the account to have been closed down?

    Thanks

It would be difficult to email the account holder that their account has been hijacked because the hijacker will almost certainly have changed the email address on the account (to one of their own). You could email the current bidders to warn them, it's basically against the rules because you could be wrong (though there is NO doubt in this case), you also get vigilantes on eBay that will place a extremely high bids on an auction like this to guarantee winning it and protect the innocent bidders.

I think I searched for 'Dell XPS Gen 2' in completed listings (just grabbed the main words out of the title). The previous account HAS been closed down but it was also a hijacked account, they've just moved on to another.
  • Ok, Thanks Jez. So back to looking at 17 inch laptops again.

    Thanks
