  • Taken from his bbc interview

He told Sky: "I have said that we will get married. I said that Copenhagen and the general election and the leadership election got in the way.

Thinking about this a bit more, now that he is Leader, where will he find the time now?

I don't see his not being married, or not being on the birth certificate as evidence that he would betray his partner. I wouldn't think very highly of him if he did, but it still wouldn't be any of my business.

    .

I don't know what the absence of his name on birth certificate would mean so I can't know how I feel about that. e.g. if it meant he couldn't be held responsible to provide for the child in event of separation I would think it remiss and relevant to a very small degree...not personally, but politically, with reference to views on society, personal responsibility and the welfare state....I think. I also think that's likely to be a fault or unfair supposition of mine, not his!

If you re-read what I wrote, you might realise I wasn't suggesting he had. I was making a general point about the OP's question: "Does a politician's private life matter?'.

I've no views about Milliband's marital situation - though I think the absence of his name from his child's birth certificate might suggest a few things - none of which do him credit.

Then again it might not, always a danger with tittle-tattle.

  • Please correct me if I'm worng but my understanding is this. If the parents are married then only one parent needs to be present to register the birth. If they are unmarried then both parents have to be present for the fathers name to be on the certificate. I'm not a labour supporter and don't really know much about Ed Millibands's private life but he could have had a perfectly legitimate reason for not being able to attend.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the fact he's unmarried either. I have been with my OH for over 7 years and I'm not particularly concerned about getting married.

He is likely to get married some point soon. I can't think of a political party leader who wasn't married if they were straight.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Does character matter? In the case of Milliband I think it does. Accepted the safe seat in Doncaster, where they would vote for a pit prop if it had a Labour rosetter; too busy to get married; too busy to register as his first child's father; stabbed his brother in the back. Not a record I would be proud of.

That seems to be the conservative parties new rhetoric 'stabbed his brother in the back'. Apparently, he did this by daring to stand in a democratic election, and was liked better than his brother.

I mean, it's terrible, these brothers who stab you in the back, by daring to win a democratic election. Shocking that the labour party would contemplate such a demon-spawn idea as democracy.

Private life can matter, depending on the persons politics. For example, if I were to stand for any political office, I would do so on a platform of social libertarianism, so there would be nothing hypocritical about the way I frequently maraud across Europe in search of debauchery. OTOH if I was standing on a family values platform, people would be entitled to call me out on it.

The classic example of this was Micheal Portillo, darling of the homophobic Tory right who did a bit of shirt-lifting in his youth.

I think it has to matter to some extent. If a politician had a private life like some of the salubrious posters on here, I would never vote for them.

Can I question your use of the word salubrious?

I always understood it to mean beneficial to health.
