Feeling a bit silly now, it didn't occur to me to leave the skin on even though if I have baked tatie the skin's the best bit! Can I do the same with carrots and other veg? I'm planning on looking into organic veg boxes, so I don't know what veg it'll be every week.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

I don't peel carrots, or potatoes, or parsnips, or butternut squash or ermmm much really. being left handed i have issues with using a veg peeler. just wash well and chop :D mushrooms brush, or get new pots, i'd never ever peel them!

or if you really want peeled spuds have you tried cooking them first, rubbing the skins off and then mashing? apologies if this is a bad suggestion.

  • The info you have been given by your council is not true. Of course you can get help even if you dont need to go out. Im indoors nearly 24/7 and I get 45 mins a day to help me get dressed, showered etc. I receive DP's too.

Please call and ask for an assessment ASAP, it is not right that you are unable to prepare food and have been given false info.

I called on Friday in tears, they said I was due an assessment, were really nice. Then a couple of hours later called back and said they couldn't help until I'd seen the ME clinic in case I can be rehabilitated. Even if the ME clinic would see me, even if I have ME, even if I can be rehabilitated, it wouldn't happen overnight, so they've left me with no help indefinitely.

I haven't been able to clean my clothes either, I moved into a council flat in June and there's no point to plumb a washing machine into and I can't lift enough to get to the laundrette (it takes me a day to collect the washing and put it in, next day switch it on, put it out to dry over a couple of days).

Unfortunately, I live on my own and don't have family nearby, so whatever state I get into affects only me so I'm pretty low down on the list of priorities.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.
  • That is disgusting!! You get help not on diagnosis but on the amount of care you require. Do you have anyone who could make a phonecall on your behalf?

That is a totally unacceptable response from the council. Who is your local council? I will make a phonecall on your behalf if you want...I am fuming about this! I am disabled and I know that this is very wrong.

Can you tell me if your mobile or limited? Are you in a warden assisted flat?

PM me if you would like. Chin up.

So sorry to hear of your difficulties!

I think if you are alone and mostly cooking just for yourself, then a Kenwood Chef may be too much mixer for you - if you are only doing small amounts then the hassle of washing it all up may outweigh the benefits. That site listed below had some really neat gadgets that would probably be more useful to you than a Kenwood Chef.

........to social services a few times, they're always helpful till it gets to the people who have to start authorising money to be spent when problems suddenly appear............ The most recent one was that they can't give me help till I've seen the ME clinic (because there could be rehabilitiation and they'd have wasted their money). The ME clinic wont see me till I've got my bipolar under control, the psych wont see me till the ME clinic have seen me. To top it all the doctors don't even know if it's ME, they're talking about an immune problem instead......

yep...all requests have to go to panel to get approved..(or they used to anyway...not so sure about now)...........very frustrating....especially when you see sooo many people who DON'T deserve the money/help they get....and then you either can't get it yourself or for the person you are caring for.....

I know this is off topic...but how long have you been bi-polar?? I was wondering did you watch the Stephen Fry programme?......I didn't think it touched on the very severe cases (which I have experience of with my mum)....it did seem to concentrate on those who were able to manage in some way.....which I think is great.....I so wish my mum had been able to.....I was very surprised when he said he hadn't had any meds since he had been diagnosed......depends on the severity I know...

I quite agree it is disgusting.......what are your experiences of Social Services Penny-Pincher? Mine obo my mum........well I've personally found them to be the biggest pile of crap/waste of space ever........as I mentioned in another post...they and the care provider saw fit to reduce mum's care hours AFTER she made an 'attempt' to top herself....apparently..not a big enough attempt to get her taken to hospital or provided with extra care on the day...that was left to me...and if I thought it was necessary...then I should take her to hospital:mad:

I know there are some who work for SS on here...and who no doubt provide/at least try to provide a good service.......don't want to tar them all with the same brush.....just my experiences so far..:o

Obviously it's hard to know just how long I've been bipolar, I started being severely depressed when I was about 14 (I'm nearly 26 now), had a major manic episode in about 2000, and was diagnosed in early 2003.

I did watch the Stephen Fry programme, as well as only concentrating on fairly mild cases I also found he only featured people who were well off enough not to need to rely on ss and the nhs, they didn't mention waiting lists or council houses or social services at all. But it did give a lot of info about the actual illness, which I guess is what it was trying to do.

I hadn't thought about having to wash the mixer, probably best not to go down that route! I'll stick to just cooking in their skins. It hadn't occurred to me that the whole point of organic veg means that its safe to do that!

Yep....the programme (and other stuff I've read over the years) has mentioned about it getting to crisis point before a diagnosis is made.......so god only knows how many other episodes my mum had before 1970!

And don't know about you...but I don't recall the wards being like those in the last episode! But then its been 13 years since I set foot in one to visit..(she's not been readmitted since because of the effort me and sis put into pushing for the right level of meds/care etc.........she spent the previous 23 years yo-yoing in and out of various hospitals)...

I do hope you do get the help and support you need......you are only young.....and have your life ahead of you....

Just a thought.....and it may be of absolutely no use:o but would writing to your local MP and getting them onside help at all?....Maybe they can speak on your behalf and try to push for things? You are one of their constituents afterall? Thinking of doing this for my mum...over something else.....might help???

Luckily, I've never been an inpatient. Or perhaps not luckily if it would have stopped any of the suicide attempts. I know that a&e here treat you like something on the bottom of their shoe if you end up there for anything self inflicted.

I'll try my MP if I don't get anywhere on my own. Right now I'm trying to deal with the debt I've built up, I can only face fighting one thing at a time for now.
