Benefit Help and Entitlement

I have found myself in a situation where everything is happening at once and very quickly.

After a serious road traffic accident, I have for 5 years been dependant on benefits.
Currently this includes, Housing & Tax Benefit and ESA.

Over the last year, my health has improved dramatically as I have been trying to get my life back on track.

I have one more hospital visit for a minor op in November and then im trying my hand at voluntary work for a couple of days to get back into the swing and see how I go.

Im currently in a house share with one other and they are moving out and away at the end of this year (Christmas).

My partner (wife) which I have rebuilt our relationship with over the last couple of years, but due to my circumstances have not been able to live together.

I would like my partner to live with me at the end of this year as she is also 6 months pregnant with my first child and we would like to become a family again.

I want to make things right and as said get my life back on track but wondering if I can afford to live.

So the current dilemma is:
I receive Housing & Tax Benefit and ESA.
My partner works full time at present but she leaves work for maternity leave first week in December and wishes to move in with me at the end of December.
She’s due to go back to work on a part time basis in March, where I will become the carer for our baby as its viable and I’m not able to work full time due to my condition.

I’m not sure what I’m entitled too or where to start.
Can anyone point me in the right direction, as there is not a CAB in my town and the JC+ is useless at giving advice?

Many thanks.

You'll get £20.30 child benefit after baby is born. You may get working & child tax credits - depending on income. Is your wife entitled to SMP or anything from her employer?

  • Why is she only going back part time if you are to be watching the child? surely you would be better off as a family financialy if she kept her full time hours, rather than cut her hours by choice and expect the tax payer to subsidise your lifestyle choices.

makes me laugh. theyre not ready to live together again but ready to have a baby? seems really @rse upwards to me!
  • Many thanks for your replies.

@sh1305, yes my wife will be entitled to SMP, not sure on her employer as of yet.

@Sam___, The company she works for is doing cut backs and letting people go. The only way she could keep her job is to go back Part Time after Christmas, with the option of going Full Time once again much later in the year. She rather do this than go unemployed.

@nannytone, thanks for your sarcastic comment, but due to another idiot i suffered a serious no fault road traffic accident where i am luck to be alive. You know nothing about me, and yet i have gone from having everything to nothing, hence why i had to live alone. It wasnt a choice! You may terminate a pregnancy but that isnt and would never be an option with us. Thanks.

Im just trying to find a solution and it it would be viable for us to live together again.

    Many thanks.

I'm sorry - but for viable, I'm reading "profitable" :(

many people don't believe in terminations. and that is there right. i myself would struggle with the idea.
i don't suggest a pregnancy is ended just that it never starts.
    one word.
    CONTRACEPTION.
  • Two words: contraception failure.

Another word: mistake. People make them. I've made them, I'd place a bet that the OP's made them and I'd hazard a guess that plenty others on the forum has made them. Can't beat people up for being human.

On a daily basis we see people here who work the system for their own ends and appear to have no intention of taking responsibility for themselves, ever. I read the first post and thought "My god, a guy who's had a terrible time yet is determined to turn his life back around, about bloody time we had a geniune case on MSE". He's standing up and taking responsibility for his child. He is seeking a little support until he is fully able to go back to work, and has made positive steps toward working again so far. That is something we see so little of on this board, so much so that we all turn into cynicists so easily. From his posts it comes across to me that if he were able, he'd be going back to work full time straight away. His wife is looking at the long term solution for maintaining her current employment. Let's not knock his confidence, eh?

OP try the benefit calculation guide here. This is only a guide and is not likely to give a bang on calculation.
  • Many thanks for your reply AsknAnswer2.

Yes it was contraception failure and was not planned at all.

Im just trying to get myself back on track, its always one step forward and two back.
    And im trying so hard.

Thanks for the link, will check it out.
