Housing benefit and part-time work - advice needed!

I'm currently claiming housing benefit and until yesterday was claiming JSA. I discovered when I signed on this Monday that my claim has been closed as I've been working part-time (16 hours per week as advised by the person I spoke to at the job centre) and apparently can only work a maximum of 15 hours and 59 minutes!

Was really peeved as the adviser I spoke to failed to mention this when I first declared I would be working part-time. But anyway, my question is, if I decide not to renew my JSA claim (I'm only receiving £6 per fortnight anyway) would I be able to up my work hours and still claim housing benefit? What is the cut off point when you're working part-time?

There is no cut off point as such as there are so many variables eg how much your rent is, how many people live in the household etc. It is on a sliding scale, the more you earn the less HB you will get. Go to your the website of your council and complete the BECS calculator putting in different rates of pay and this should give you a good idea of what you would be entitled do depending on your income
  • Im a single mum of 2...im contracted to work 18 hours a week and i get about half of my rent paid for me every month through housing benefit.
As Briggy posted before, it depends on your financial circumstances etc so its worth checking out your local council website
  • Thanks for the responses. I'm actually contracted to work 12 hours per week but, working in retail, there's usually quite a few hours up for grabs. Whilst claiming JSA I just stuck with 16 hours for obvious reasons but I'd love to work a bit more without the hassle of signing on. With Christmas coming up I'm sure there will be even more hours available.

I hasten to add, it's not the best paid job in the world (I'm on the national minimum wage) so hopefully I won't be penalised too much.
  • If you do work for 16 hours or more, you may be entitled to Working Tax Credit if you aren't already claiming?

I currently manage a Housing Benefit service and have been working in Housing / council tax benefit (as was) since 2001.
