How to setup Direct Debit ?

Dear All
I have set up a few SO from my bank a/c using Internet banking. But I have not tried to set up DD yet. For the DD I normally use telephone banking or do it in banches?.
1. Could we do it ourselves ?.
2. What information I need to provide to set up DD ?
3. Possible Pitfall of doing this ?

The company collecting the money has to set up the direct debit. You provide them with your account details and then they contact your bank and set it up.0
