Fuel rip off with Car Hire abroad!

Hi, can anyone help, just hired a car in Malaga for our annual holiday. Paid £72.00, good rate for a small car. Then they stung us 60 euros for a tank of fuel...it was a diesel! We drove all week and only used a quarter of a tank, the deal was to return empty....yeah right! What a rip off.

Does anyone know of a firm that gives you half a tank and wants half returned or similar? Or, better still, is there a website where you can discover, in advance, the fuel policies of these companies?

Thanks Julie

Every car hire company I have used anywhere in the world has always given the option of taking the fuel deal or sorting it out myself.

Did they not give you an option?

The default is for them to try to rip you off, you need to find a full/full supplier and scour the small print.

I used Martins guide and the comparison sites and found the ones that had full/full available. When I got to the Lanzarote airport pickup they tried the full/empty on me but I showed them the documentation and insisted full/full.

Its a well known money maker for them and you will only fall for it once. There will be someone else though who will fall for it next week and have to pay.

The policy is usually in the small print of the quote.

Holiday Autos for instance have this in there terms

    fuel conditions
The following two policies apply for mainland Spain and Mallorca. The full-empty policy: Your car will be have a full tank of fuel on collection, you will be charged for this full tank of fuel and must return the vehicle empty. No refunds will be made for any unused fuel. This applies to rentals of 4 days or more.

The full-full policy: Your car will be full on collection and must be returned full. This applies to rentals of 3 days or less. For the canaries the following Policy will apply. The Same - Same policy: Your vehicle must be returned with the same amount of fuel as when it was collected or you will be charged a 15 euro processing fee.
So for a weeks rental you have to use full-empty.

Time to find another supplier and see what policies they have.

Or leave it idling for a few hours in the rentals return. :D
